It’s the last week of the YouthWorks summer. As YouthWorks wraps things up in communities and hits the road, we thought we might tell you about some of our favorite pit stops on the drive home.
Iowa 80 Truckstop / Walcott, IA, I-80, Exit 284
Iowa 80 Truckstop is the world’s largest truck stop. On a daily basis, the stop is used by over 5,000 truckers. Notable amenities include a 50-foot-long salad bar in the Iowa 80 Kitchen, a theater and a game room, as well as on-site barbers and dentists to care for the personal needs of those passing through.
South of the Border / Dillon, SC, I-95 & US 301-501
South of the Border is a towering spectacle of a truck stop, touting a 200-foot-tall Sombrero Tower and a 97-foot-tall statue of Pedro, the stop’s mascot. Included at the station are restaurants, mini-golf and a small amusement park.
Johnson’s Corner / Loveland, CO, I-25, Exit 254
Known for their world famous cinnamon rolls, Johnson’s Corner has been open 24-7 since it was built in 1952! To compliment a café that’s gotten multiple awards for tasty dishes, an on-site chapel serves up soul food every week. Plus, the stop hosted the set for a scene from “Larger than Life,” a 1996 movie starring Bill Murray and a giant elephant.
Wall Drug / Wall, SD, I-90, Exits 109 & 110
Not technically a truck stop, Wall Drug is still a “must stop” for those driving through South Dakota. A big part of the novelty of Wall Drug are the hundreds of signs leading to the diverse attraction in the middle of nowhere. The store features a variety of western collectibles, an 80-foot dinosaur and a host of life-sized carved wooden figures.
